It looks like Saints running back Reggie Bush will be out quite some time after having surgery on his left knee. Even though the rehab on his knee will keep him out of action until June, if all goes well, but he should be ready for Saints minicamp.

Once again, same old story with Reggie Bush, the guy just can’t stay healthy. When Bush is 100% he is as dangerous as anyone in the NFL both out of the backfield and as a receiver, but seeing Bush at a 100% for a significant amount of time would be miracle.

Another big question that is asked about Bush every season since he made the jump to the NFL from USC is whether or not he can be a feature back in this league. So far, no he can’t, but only time will tell if he can handle it.

Personally, I think he is better suited as being a combo back by only getting 10 to 15 carries a game and being used as a receiver as well.

Although his New Orleans Saints didn’t make the playoffs and he missed out on the NFL MVP to the Colts Peyton Manning, Drew Brees finally got some respect and recognition for his amazing season by winning the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.

It was a tough year for Brees, his team never seemed to come together with all the injuries to key players during the season, but the 2008 Offensive Player of the Year still kept his head up and did the best he could do with what he was given.

Coming only 15 yards short of Miami Dolphins legendary quarterback Dan Marino’s record of passing yards in a season, Brees showed despite not having his best wide receiver on the gridiron in Marques Colston he could still be one of the league’s best quarterbacks and come 15 yards away from making NFL history.

When people think of the top quarterbacks in the NFL in today’s game the first names that come to mind are the New England Patriots Tom Brady and Indianapolis Colts Peyton Manning. It is hard to compete with to QBs that have won MVP awards and Super Bowl titles, but a big reason for Manning and Brady’s success has been their supporting cast of top notch receivers, running backs and tight ends which Drew Brees has never really had. Granted Brees does have Colston and running back Reggie Bush, but compared to the likes of Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Randy Moss, Bush and Colston aren’t even close.

The best attribute about Brees in my opinion is his ability to make his team better no matter his supporting cast. Brees has the uncanny ability at quarterback to get all his receivers involved and always keep the opposing defense on their heels.

Drew Brees may not be in the same league with Manning and Brady just yet, but I guarantee it won’t be long before he is mentioned in the same breath as these two future hall of famers.

Even though the New Orleans Saints season was disappointing to say the least, it would be hard to argue that Drew Brees didn’t have one of his best seasons yet.

Every year, every season, Drew Brees is one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the NFL. He racks up the passing yards and the touchdowns every game even though this season he had some wide receiver problems with receivers either dropping the football or out with injuries.

Even with the injuries to his receiving corps, he was still able to come pretty close to seemingly untouchable records from NFL quarterback legends Dan Fouts and Dan Marino.

It is becoming more and more apparent that Drew Brees is a hall of fame caliber quarterback. Brees may not have the Super Bowl or the teams that will go down as being some of the best all-time, but he always comes out and plays his heart out.

Drew Brees literally came within about 100 yards or so of breaking three NFL records. The first record he came only 15 yards short of which was Dan Marino’s 5,084 passing yards in a single season. The second was Dan Fouts record for passing yards in two consecutive seasons combined with 9,517 which Brees was only 25 passing yards short of breaking. And finally the third record that Brees just barely came short of breaking was another Fouts record of three seasons of combined passing yards at 13,967, Brees came only 57 passing yards shy of getting this one.

Although this is just tough luck for Drew Brees, I can only think that this will motivate Brees to come out next season with a vengeance and something to prove. Hopefully, that is exactly what will happen!
